Itinerary: Sorrento (3), Rome (3)
Day 1 – Air
Jet through the night to Italy.
Day 2 – Sorrento
Your private bus and guide will transfer you south to the Bay of Naples area. Arrive in Sorrento. Its perfumed gardens, orange and lemon groves, gleaming white houses, and rugged cliffs make this pretty tree-shaded resort the most popular in Italy. An Evening Walking Tour with your guide introduces you to an area that has inspired poets, writers and musicians for more than 2,500 years.
Day 3 – Sorrento
Journey to Pompeii, the Roman city both destroyed and preserved by an eruption of Mt. Vesuvius more than 2000 years ago. You will find the reality of Roman life in the bakeries, wine-shops, groceries, villas and temples buried in giant showers of cinders and volcanic pebbles. Return to Sorrento for a delizioso Pizza Dinner tonight.
Day 4 – Sorrento
Cross the sparkling blue sea to the Isle of Capri, or “Goat Island,” by steamer. With limestone cliffs that rise up from the Mediterranean sea and white-washed houses, Capri is one of the most beautiful places in the world. You will spend a full day exploring this enchanting island, from its colorful harbor (Marina Grande) to its highest town (Anacapri). Option: Visit the famous Blue Grotto, a cavern entered from the sea by a narrow opening, in a rowboat and delight at the vibrant blue light reflecting all around you.
Day 5 – Rome
Travel to the Eternal City with a stop first to see the Abbey of Montecassino, founded by St. Benedict in 529, and Monte Calvario, crowned by a Polish war memorial. The abbey is of special importance because it was destroyed and rebuilt on four separate occasions, the most recent was in 1944 near the end of WWII. Arrive in Rome for a Walking Tour with your guide to Piazza Navona, the Spanish Steps and Piazza di Trevi, site of the famous fountain. Be sure to toss a coin into the Trevi to guarantee your return to Roma some day.
Day 6 – Rome
Take a guided Rome City Tour to see Circus Maximus, Palatine Hill, the Arch of Constantine, visit the Colosseum, and go up Capitoline Hill for a view of the Roman Forum. Leave Italy behind as you enter the independent city-state of the Vatican. Visit St. Peter’s Basilica, the largest church in the world. From St. Peter’s continue to the Vatican Museum. Among the impressive work is the Sistine Chapel’s spectacular vault by Michelangelo.
Day 7 – Rome
Today is free for discovery. Listen quietly to the splashing fountains while you enjoy a creamy frullato fruit shake in a tranquil piazza, or explore the wonders that lie beyond the seven hills with your advisors.
