Day 1 – San Jose
Journey to spectacular Costa Rica! You’ll arrive in the capital city of San José, where your private bus and driver will escort you to discover this bustling, energetic city on a San José City Tour. See Rohrmoser, a charming residential area and home to many embassies: The Teatro Nacional, built in 1897 with funds raised from a self-imposed coffee tax; and the Museo Nacional, where you can still see bullet holes in the turrets from the 1948 civil war. Then on to the suburb of Moravia, a town famous for fine leather craftsmanship and other quality souvenirs of Costa Rica.
Day 2 – Arenal
En route to Arenal, travel through picturesque villages and coffee and sugar cane plantations to Sarchi, site of the famous Oxcart Factory where artisans handpaint the oxcarts. These highly skilled craftsmen also produce beautiful bowls, plates, furniture and walking sticks. Pass through Zarcero, one of the most charming Costa Rican towns. Its claim to fame is the fancifully sculpted bushes in front of its picturesque little church: gigantic green rabbits, horses, ox carts and elephants. Be sure and have your camera ready to snap these topiaries! The conical shape of Costa Rica’s most active volcano towers over the waters of the scenic Lake Arenal. It rumbles regularly, and bursts into occasional eruptions. Have dinner in Arenal, then luxuriate under the evening sky in the clear, thermal waters of Tabacón Hot Springs.
Day 3 – San Jose
En route to San José, take advantage of an optional excursion and you’ll ride high above the forest canopy on the guided Rain Forest Aerial Tram. You’ll have a fantastic view of the breathtaking beauty of the rain forest and the Braulio Carrillo National Park. See the amazing flora of this region including the subcanopy of mosses, ferns and orchids. Another optional field trip is unlike anything you’ve experienced! On a Canopy Tour, you’ll use cables and pulleys to swing from tree to tree and platform to platform like a modern–day Tarzan. Expert guides assist and inform you on this exciting journey across the treetops of the rain forest. This is an excellent experience for the adventurous explorer! Or spend the rest of the day shopping and practicing your Spanish language skills in the local mercados of the cosmopolitan capital city, San José.
