Day 1 – San Juan
Depart from the mainland. Arrive in San Juan and transfer to your hotel.
Day 2 – San Juan
Begin your day early with an excursion to the only rainforest in the U.S. Forest System, El Yunque. The 28,00 acre park is lush with tropical vegetation and makes a hospitable home for many varied species of animals. Marvel at this natural wonder, perhaps taking a cool dip in La Mina Falls. In the afternoon, travel on to Luquillo Beach for free time to relax before returning to San Juan.
Day 3 – San Juan-Lajas
Depart on your full day trek to the spactacular underground caverns of Rio Camuy. This underground river is the third-largest of its kind in the world. Also visit Cornell University’s Arecibo Observatory, which operates the world’s largest radio telescope. Continue to Lajas for the evening.
Day 4 – Lajas
This morning, go on a snorkeling excursion to explore the magical marine life in the local coral reefs. Spend the balance of the afternoon at leisure to shop, dine on delicious fresh seafood, or just relax on the beach. This evening, visit the Phosphorescent Bay, where millions of luminescent dinoflagellates illuminate the water when disturbed by movement.
Day 5 – Lajas-Ponce
Begin this morning with a look into Puerto Rico’s indigenous origins. Visit the Tibes Indian Ceremonial Park, where you can view artifacts dating back almost 2,000 years. Continue on to visit the colonial city of Ponce, named for the explorer Ponce de Leon. Make a stop at the Museo de Artes de Ponce, which houses a surprising collection of Dutch, Spanish, German and Italian paintings, as well as North American and Puerto Rican works.
Day 6 – Ponce
This morning, enjoy a remarkable tour of the 19th century coffee plantation, Hacienda Buena Vista. See how coffee was grown, harvested, roasted and packaged in the 1800s. Visit the hilltop Serralles Castle, now a museum dedicated to the sugar cane industry in Puerto Rico. Continue to the town square where you will visit the Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe and escape the hustle and bustle of the city.
Day 7 – Ponce-San Juan
Return to San Juan this morning and visit the Old City on a walking tour through 500 years of Spanish Colonial history. See the 16th century El Morro Castle, which is actually a fortress that was designed to secure Havana Bay. Enjoy the balance of your day at leisure to shop, sightsee or relax on the beach.
